Where will you go? - Free Bus travel anywhere in England from 1st April 2008

From next April, if you are aged 60 or over, disabled or blind, you will be eligible for a national bus pass and you will be able to travel anywhere in England free of charge after 9.30 am and anytime at the weekend. That means you will be able to see more of the country whenever you like. It could mean short breaks become easier. You may want to go and visit relatives or just see more of the countryside. And, of course, your new pass will allow you to travel free of charge in Northampton - as existing passes do at the moment.

Coming soon - New Dog Laws

New laws about dogs in Northampton

Northampton Borough Council will soon be adopting new powers that apply to dog owners.  They will require dog owners to:

Order one, the dog fouling law, has already gone through the consultation phase, as it does not differ very much from the law that is already in existence.

The council has put together an exhibition providing information on the remaining four proposed new dog laws, and they are asking members of the public for their views before the council puts any proposals forward for a full consultation later on in the year.

The exhibition will be on display in a number of libraries across the town from 31 March to 2 May.  It will contain information on the new laws and where the council is proposing the new laws could apply.  There will be a feedback form that members of the public can use for any comments or suggestions they may have.  These can either be posted back to the council free of charge or placed in the boxes provided beside each display.

Councillor Trini Crake, Northampton Borough Council cabinet member responsible for environmental health, said:  “We are very keen to get the opinions of members of the public on the new dog laws so that we end up with a set of laws that are workable, and that help keep Northampton a safe and green place to live.”

The exhibition will be at Duston Library from 31 March to 7 April; Hunsbury and Wootton Fields Libraries from 8 April to 14 April; Weston Favell Library and Kingsthorpe Libraries from 15 April to 21 April; Central Library 21 April to 2 May and the Guildhall foyer from 22 April to 2 May.

For further information on the laws, or to ask for a feedback form, call Northampton Borough Council on 838000, email ehealth@northampton.gov.uk or visit our web site http://www.northampton.gov.uk/animalwelfare and search for ‘dog control orders’ to download a form.

A poem by Mike...

It Can Be Done

We’re now in July and the sky

is still crying

Is it because our world

is dying

With diminishing rain forests

changing our climate

With chemicals and additives

changing our diet

We dump stuff all over

polluting land and sea

There’s not much time

left for you and me

So forget our differences

Religion or creed

And save this planet

it is what we need.
